Jund Zombies

Created by Stifffmeister 10 years ago

Description

Jund aggro isn't a new strategy, and neither is Zombies, but I haven't seen them combined for a while now. The core of the deck is its removal-resistant threats, the unholy trio of Geralf's Messenger, Lotleth Troll, and Falkenrath Aristocrat. None of them care in the slightest about Supreme Verdict, and all of them happen to dodge the vast majority of removal spells in the format.

They are supported by cheap creatures in Gravecrawler, Diregraf Ghoul, Blood Artist, and Deathrite Shaman, all of which have a bunch of nice synergies. Gravecrawler gets discarded to Lotleth Troll and sacrificed to Aristocrat, Blood Artist triggers off Messenger dying and Aristocrat eating creatures, and almost everything brings back Gravecrawler.

Magic 2014 also gave the deck Lifebane Zombie, which is starting to become a Standard staple. It's even at its best in this deck, where not only is the 3 damage much better than in normal Jund, its creature type actually matters. Dreg Mangler rounds out the Zombie squad and gives the deck yet another thing to do with excess mana, which is part of the reason this aggro deck can afford to play twenty-three lands.

Being three colors also gives the deck access to some pretty sweet removal. Abrupt Decay, Tragic Slip, Brimstone Volley, and a lone Liliana all kill creatures efficiently, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. I like Volley the best of them, because in concert with Blood Artist, Geralf's Messenger, and a sacrifice outlet, this deck can realistically burn the opponent out from even a very high life total.
